Bangwe Factory, run by the Malawi Council for the Handicapped (MACOHA), was opened in 1976 to train and employ people with disabilities in spinning and weaving. The factory has since expanded and now includes tailoring, screen-printing and tie-dye departments. We produce a wide range of high quality goods, from rugs and wall hangings to bags and t-shirts. Bangwe Factory employs 101 members of staff, of whom over 85% have disabilities that include: visual and hearing impairments and learning and physical disabilities. The factory prides itself on being the only dedicated employment centre for people with disabilities in Malawi. It seeks to provide on-the-job training and long-term waged employment but also to showcase to other employers the abilities and potential of people with disabilities. Our ethos is that disability is not inability. We are now offering tours of Bangwe Factory. Each tour lasts 30 minutes and visitors are shown how our products are designed and made and given demonstrations of the various techniques used. There is also the chance to visit the factory shop. A tour costs 200 kwacha per person and all the proceeds from tours go towards purchasing assistive devices for the employees of the factory. There is no minimum number of people required for a tour. Bangwe Factory is located on the Robert Mugabe Highway (M4) approximately 10 minutes drive from central Limbe, opposite Bangwe Post Office. If you are coming by public transport, take a bus going to Namiyango or Bangwe from Limbe bus station and ask to be dropped at MACOHA Bangwe Factory.
