Butterfly Space is a unique community organisation that aims to bring together passionate tourists with the community here in Malawi. Our main focus of the lodge being community, environment and volunteers. We are wholeheartedly involved in the community we live and have initiated several projects, both on and off site. These include Gulugufe Nursery, Nkhata Bay Community Information Room, Chikale Youth Club and special needs group, permaculture school gardens and environmental demonstrations, sports teams, HIV support and nutrition workshops, adventure playgrounds and more recently a media centre and recording room. we try and encourage people's involvement by offering half price accommodation at the lodge and these volunteers are welcome to assist us in any of our long term projects, finding an area that suits them most. Alternatively, if volunteers have a particular passion or skill, then we do our best to help them get involved or set up something in that particular field. Longer term and more qualified volunteers can find more permanent attachments through the local Government, capacity building at a local level. We will ensure as far as possible, that everyone is involved in an area they are interested in. Because of the nature of the work here volunteers will be expected to be able to take the initiative and work on their own sometimes. We will endeavour to supply equipment and additional support, as and when they should be needed. There is no cost to participate but volunteers are responsible for covering their living expenses. Volunteers can choose to stay at Butterfly lodge or whether to organise their own accommodation somewhere else in the area. All volunteers who stay at Butterfly receive half price accommodation and there is also a small self catering area for use by the volunteers if they wish to cook for themselves. Apart from that Butterfly lodge is a running business and has a restaurant and bar service which people are free to use as they wish.
