This cooperative started its activities in 1996 with 12 members, all women. Most of these women are widows from the 1994 genocide. They were left with no income, no help and no hope. Nyarubuye, Kirehe district. Women from the "Abakundamuco" (or those who love the culture) women's cooperative practise and teach Imigongo painting as homage to the Tutsi tribe culture and history. Many of these women are survivors of the 1994 genocide in Nyarubuye. These 3D paintings are made with a combination of cow manure (to create depth), diluted tar and water-based paints. Mainly their market is arts and crafts fairs nationwide. The Abakundamuco are national award winning champions of this art form.Traditonally, the Imigongo painting was used to decorate the royal palace and large celebrations such as weddings
