Bergvliet High School has been a leader in environmental education for more than 15 years, with its annual Grade 10 Conservation Camp firmly established as part of its curriculum. Approximately 250 students and teachers spend three days of hands-on environmental discovery in the Betty?s Bay area on the southern Cape coast. Bergvliet High has also been a leader in recycling of paper, bottles, tins and plastic since 1987. The recycling depot, operated by a volunteer team of parents and supporters of the school, earns the school approximately R100 000 each year. Bergvliet High is active in campaigning against the destruction of local environmental assets. Hacks and other forms of alien vegetation control are undertaken regularly in the Silvermine Nature Reserve and the local wetland. School projects are aimed at local environmental issues. Bergvliet High would welcome being able to share experiences with other groups or bodies with similar interests.
