Together with many partner organisations, Hivos contributes to a world with equal opportunities for people to develop their talents. Hivos attempts to realise this by offering financial support and by advising, networking, advocacy, providing education and exchanging knowledge. Financial support Hivos provides financial resources to organisations, enabling them to achieve their goals and those of Hivos. Financial support by Hivos is long-term and flexible. Accepting the risks of new initiatives, Hivos is also prepared to finance costs related to the development of programmes and the organisational aspects related. As much as 73.7 million euros were allocated to partner organisations in 2010 out of the total Hivos budget of 75.2 million euros. Cooperation and networking Hivos encourages networking activities between organisations in developing countries and in Europe.
The added value of Hivos in these networks includes its vast and varied network of partners, its international contacts, its regional offices, its expertise on various themes and its knowledge of ICT. Advocacy In the Netherlands the advocacy activities of Hivos are aimed at increasing the awareness of governments, decision makers and the general public on certain issues and the options available to redress unfairness. Internationally, Hivos focuses on the European Union and on international organisations. These activities are intended to strengthen the position of civil society and particularly the specific themes of Hivos.

Education Hivos aims to create more support for international cooperation in the Netherlands through its educational activities. In addition, Hivos wishes to increase public awareness of justice and sustainable development, as well as to encourage critical reflection on and debates about these topics and the options available. In terms of content, the educational activities of Hivos are linked to its advocacy activities, such as in the case of the abovementioned campaigns. Knowledge Programme In 2007 Hivos set up a multidisciplinary knowledge programme, integrating knowledge development, knowledge transformation and knowledge application on specific topics with academic institutes, think tanks and a wide array of civil society practitioners. In order to share its own expertise more systematically with interested parties, Hivos has created a platform where they can add and exchange information and knowledge themselves.
